The Raven

Posted on

Anyone watching The Following? It’s the new TV show starring Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy that centres around the work of Edgar Allan Poe. I won’t give the major points of the plot away but if you like thriller/mystery/good cop-bad guy shows, then this is a good one.

I recently finished a pair of fingerless gloves inspired by The Raven and then I had these socks on the needles. And top that off with The Following. Talk about an overdose of Poe! These socks are called Raven Swirl by Cookie A.

Nothing casual about it

Surprisingly, this is the first official pair of socks I knitted this year. I originally planned a 12-pair plunge for 2013 so this ticks off January’s pair. It’s my entry for CelticCastOn’s KAL on her blog.

luca2013 (6)
Luca is not your typical cat. For one, he doesn’t have a bushy tail. And he doesn’t like cardboard boxes. I don’t know why. We tried coaxing him into boxes of all sizes but he wouldn’t get into them. Although he did sit for a long time on top of this box which is now making its way to the kids. It’s filled with all kinds of stuff that they asked for, Joseph’s Playstation 3 included. But I won’t show you what else is inside the box, it’s a surprise for the kids. Instead let me show you some stuff I finished knitting this year so far.

Plissé

Wandering inside a Marks and Spencer’s recently, the one in Dubai Festival City if you want to know, I came across a line of machine-knitted sweaters which was nothing more than a series of ribbing from hem to neckline. As a hand knitter, my first thought was “I can do that!” and then thought to myself, “What if I put that series of ribbing onto a pair of socks?”

And so Plissé was born.

I don’t know what I did before I discovered knitting. But I am so glad I did! Otherwise there won’t be any bunnehs!

WIP-tastic Monday

Lately it’s been micro-blogging on Facebook and Instagram and, frankly, it can get tiresome after a while. Anyway, it’s been ages since I’ve done a post like this. Could just be the ticket to get me blogging regularly again.

But before that, a bit of self-promotion. Ahem. In case you haven’t checked it out yet, Knitter’s Choice Club sign-ups are open.

Random update

Running another blog has caused me to neglect this one. But it had to be done. I wanted to first move the Dubai Knits shop out of Etsy, but had to do it slowly and then separate it from this blog which is more about my own knitting experiences, life as an expatriate in the UAE and just random photos about my family and friends. And the cat, of course! Hopefully I won’t be absent from here for too long again.

What’s been happening then? We attended two birthdays in as many months; the first one being that of baby Johann who is not such a baby anymore. He’s had his first proper haircut so he no longer sport the long Beatles-ish mop and he is now more social than before. Plus his father makes the most awesome cakes! Just look at this spread at Johann’s birthday do.

FO: I got the blues

The colour blue is very prominent in my stash. In fact I have 67 different types of blue somewhere in those cupboards right now. And it’s not just my regular stash, even the yarns that I dye are usually shades of blue. It’s just about the easiest shade to work with and I won’t apologise for dyeing or knitting with blue yarn every chance I get.

This post is about a couple of blue projects I finished recently which went out to a swap partner in Portland, Oregon. Read the rest of this entry

Hats are some of the easiest and most fun things to knit. They’re mostly knitted in the round, with only two ends to seam (the tail from the cast on and the end when you draw the crown closed). The brim is usually ribbed for stretch and fit and the body of the hat is where all the action happens.

My latest hat project is a test knit for a dear friend, Preeti. Just like her, this hat is simple, fun and highly practical. It starts with a twisted ribbing at the brim.

FO: Find a Penny

It’s been a while since I tested a knitting pattern for anyone. I kinda miss it – didn’t think I would, but I do.

So when I received an email from dear Lindsay asking if I wanted to test knit a new shawl design, I jumped from the get-go. I was so happy that she designed a DK weight shawl because it gave me an excuse to try out one of soon-to-disappear Luxe DK yarn base. And pssst…..the sale is still on over at my Etsy shop.
