Some things never change

7 Dec

This is the coffe mug that started it all. Well, sort of. It was at the end of one of those relaxing, fun Friday afternoons at the Marina Mall when the Caribou Coffee lady came to us saying their large coffee mugs are on sale: only Dh15 (around US$4) only! Instead of packing up to leave, we scrambled to get cheap but handy coffee mugs. The plan was to use them as yarn bowls. Hala bought 10 I think and the idea is you get your mug labeled with your name so that you use the same mug every time you visit the cofee shop. Instead of names, she got them to label the mugs like this:

This one time, in Dubai…

First things first. Eibee, someone’s missing you!

It’s been a while

27 Nov

Trust me to neglect my blog during NaBloPoMo! Work and home have been very hectic and I have resorted to micro-blogging via Facebook and Instagram/Tweeter. It covers the gap but does not necessarily fill the void. I promise to try and get better at this before I forget how to compose a post and add photos, etc.

First things first, babies! Over the last couple of months, two of our beloved Amiras (Louise and Marion) have given birth to beautiful little people. Naturally, we were there to give a baby shower.

Squishy

13 Oct

I have a new bunch of Squishy all dyed up and coming to the shop soon. But first I am taking them to the knitting group in Abu Dhabi and then they will meet a travelling knitter en route to Australia via Dubai. Maybe some of these skeins would eventually go and live with her.

You haven’t tried Squishy yet? Remember this is the yarn base for the Yarn Club which is shaping up nicely and right on schedule to launch end of January 2012.

Just a quick note regarding the colourways. Most of these are one-of-a-kind but a few can be repeated. If you want to know which colourways are more or less repeatables, drop me a comment or an email.

Blogging has been very spotty these past few weeks. I’m sure I will get back on my regular schedule but need time to save up drafts and schedule them for publishing so that I am in no hurry every time to post.

In other news, I have re-joined the workforce and will be up early again every day from now on. My children will be happy to know that their weekly allowance and Christmas gifts are safe and on hand this year!

Knitting weekend

22 Aug

Hello there. Remember me?

Yes, yes, I’ve been absent. Again. What can I say? Knitting is more enjoyable to me these days than blogging. That and the fact that the only computer we have at home right now is a desktop which is fixed in the children’s bedroom. Plus I have to get in a queue to use it.

What have I been doing apart from knitting? Not much. These tiny puffy honeycombs might take over my life and our flat at some point in the near future though. Photo shows Jackie’s and Mel’s combined first efforts to make puffs for their Beekeeper’s Quilt. In Ruth’s adorably geeky and utalitarian fingerprint bowl.

Getting there

12 Aug

Under 6 hours to go for ARTE and I am nearly wiped out. The past two weeks or so of preparation for this event, most of which happened in the last few days, has taken its toll on me.

Still, I’m happy to learn that I can still cut it when it comes to working under pressure.

Hope to see you at DFC tonight. Come by and say hi if you’re around.

Dubai Knits at ARTE Soukh

7 Aug

I blame the heat and the yarn fumes and what they’ve done to my brain for deciding to participate in the first Ramadan Market of the ARTE Soukh. Yes, I’m doing it!!!

If you are in town next weekend, please come by the Dubai Festival City on the 12th August, Friday and visit Dubai Knits. ARTE (Artisans of the Emirates) supports hand-made crafts by UAE-based artisans. Since it is the Holy Month of Ramadan, ARTE will be held from 6pm to 11pm this time only.

I will be showcasing every yarn currently available in my Etsy shop as well as new colours you may not have seen before. There may or may not be a sneak peek of the first colourway for the planned Yarn Club. I haven’t decided on that one yet. I will also have caked yarns, needles and hooks at the table for an informal “yarn tasting”. So you can try out the yarn before committing to it.

If nothing else, feel free to come and knit with me a while! :)

More knitting content. This time I bring you some finished projects. Jackie suspected that having all the time in the world to knit is what caused my right wrist to hurt this weekend. I wrapped my hand in bandage overnight to avoid unnecessary movement during sleep and it helped. Still, I’m taking it slow.

This is my favourite part of sock knitting: grafting the toe!

Soap, yarn and knitting

2 Jul

I posted this photo on Facebook and someone asked if it was a new pet. Sorry, no, cute as she is, Chandra is not ours. She belongs to Monika. I only visited. To learn how to make soap. :)
