Pumpkin Day

31 Oct

No, it’s not Sam Winchester Day. Although that has a nice ring to it. It’s Halloween! The shops in Dubai are in the spirit. Costumes are all over the place, Starbucks is serving spiced pumpkin latte again (which I think should be a year-round item on the menu anyway) and pumpkins, great big orange pumpkins are everywhere.

Eye-candy Friday

29 Oct

Nothing new to show you today so I thought I’d dig up old stash and put them on a showcase.

Today’s lucky winner is my skein of Socks That Rock Mediumweight in the colourway Mochaberry. There’s something to be said for the densse yet squishy fabric this yarn makes. I love the subtle pink in this skein with the occassional brighter streak of pink.

Celebrity knitter

28 Oct

I’ve heard about celebrities who knit: Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Tracy Ullman, Katherine Heigl and apparently even Tim Daly! The latest one I heard about is young, beautiful and talented Amanda Seyfried. Yes, she of the Veronica Mars and, more recently, Letters to Juliet fame.

Want proof?

Check out these photos of her knitting a garter stitch and cable sweater. She even took a pause to count her stitches!

How cute is that?  I think I love her more now.

Little Sockhead

WIP-tastic Monday

25 Oct

Back to the usual knitting content.

I have been sidelined these past couple of days – my weekend- due to one thing or another. But it was good because I had the time to step away from the projects, take a breather and get back into it with much needed gusto. Gusto? Who says that word anymore?!

Anyway, WIPs are still around. I often wonder if there will ever be a time when I will have no WIPs to show you. And then I snap up to reality, and the 5 or so project bags lingering around taunting me with the half-done pair of socks or forgotten shawl or other. Yeah, I’m kidding myself.

But at least the Goodale is almost done! I blocked it last Thursday and it dried up over the weekend. I will have probably sewn the pockets, did the hem and put the buttons by the time this post gets published, but here she is just before all that finishing happens.

Oh and before you jump to the rest of this post, put the darkest sunglasses you have on right NOW.

Last Saturday

23 Oct

We usually do not go out on Saturday, but last week we had to. And it was a shock to my system because I was on house arrest all week, thanks to The Boss for letting me take the week off to relax. Thank God I didn’t light up in flames when sunlight hit me!

It wasn’t shopping day but I took these babies home. Bargain books at Borders! I have the first few books in the Anita Blake series and was so happy to find three of them for Dh10 each (that’s about US$2.75)!  The Alex Cross novel is for Dh10 and the Stitch n Bitch was Dh50 – still much cheaper than the normal price. I also picked up three cookbooks which I hope to put to good use soon.

Eye-candy Friday

22 Oct

As the TMNT say….Cow-a-Bugga! Or something like that.

Yep, you guessed it. This edition of Eye-candy Friday is Bugga! related. Sanguine Gryphon’s creation deserves the exclamation mark, as my friend Pretty said in her latest blog post.

I do not have that much Bugga! in my stash but what I have, I love to bits. This skein was my very first; a destash from Ravelry over a year ago. I love the colour, I love the squishiness and the price is so worth it. Horned Beetle is the colourway name, and this will be next on my needles being knit up as my Koolhaas hat.

Books

21 Oct

With instantly downloadable PDF patterns available on Ravelry and elsewhere online, my knitting book purchase has declined this past year. Still, holding a glossy publication with colourful photos and detailed shots of techniques and special stitches is a treat.

My latest acquisitions were carefully chosen for the type of patterns they contain. Thank goodness for Ravelry featuring details of each pattern on these books so that I could scrutinize every details, look at projects already completed and weigh in my yarn options. It has certainly made it so much easier making a decision to buy the books.

The first book is New England Knits by Cecily Glowik MacDonald and Melissa LaBarre. The second book is Brave New Knits by Julie Turjoman with photography by Jared Flood and foreword by Jessica Marshall Forbes (co-founder of Ravelry.com). Yes, frecklegirl herself!

Yarn love

19 Oct

Remember that blog contest I had a while ago?

Well, the prize made its way s l o w l y to the rightful winner, Hazel, and she got it today. Yay! Read her story here. Thanks for the unsolicited pimpage too!

Well then, I guess it’s time to think up of a new blog contest. Watch this space.

The two Vincents

19 Oct

When I was pregnant with mythird child and we found out it was a boy, Bernie was naturally over the moon. I did not have to think about what name I was going to give him, because I knew I wanted to call him Joseph. But since we gave the two girls a second name that started with a V, we wanted to keep it going with Joseph. Again, I did not have to think twice about it. I wanted to call him Vincent, after Van Gogh.

Fast forward to seven years later when I was pregnant with my fourth child. I didn’t bother finding out about the gender because I wanted it to be a surprise for once. All throughout the 34 weeks that I carried that child, I was adamant that it was a girl. And then of course I was proven wrong when Patrick came out. He was born on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, hence the first name. But, dear God almighty, I was stumped for a second name that started with a V.

So he ended up as a Vincent as well. It sounds good anyway and it’s a good Christian name. So began the tale of the two Vincents.
