We did it!

28 Nov
Bernie and I, along with over a hundred other students recently completed the Digital Basic Photography Class through Lightform International Filipino Photographers Guild. Or LIFPG. Phew! What a mouthful. It’s actually better to say Lightform, not sure why they don’t do it. Anyway, we have the certificates to prove it which we can put up on the wall of our future studio, insha’allah! LOL!
Here’s me with my certificate and my sister-in-law looking on. She also completed the course with us.And there’s Bernie. The dress code was formal so no matter how much he hated it he had to wear a tie and proper trousers and dress shoes. We sat in a table with the rest of our group, which by the way won the Most Cooperative Group award. Yay! I put it down to the fact that we consist of four married couples – married life grounds you down like nobody’s business. Plus the singles in our group are pretty levelheaded folks too! Oh and add that to the fact that Ashley volunteers to host short programs for the group and Eduard helped design the new Lightform wesbite. Check it out on lightform.ae. Here’s Ashley posing with her entry to the competition and her final project.Joseph trying out Ashley’s guitar. Orly and Pauline, beautiful couple. Both Nikon users. :) Another Nikon couple, my sister-in-law Linell and her husband, Bernie’s older brother Larry…
…who incidentally also completed Level 2 of the course which means he is now a certified photographer. He will be covering our office gala dinner next month.
Level 1 of the course starts in January and I think I’m the only one signing up from the family. I want to do this because I think the skills I learned are enough but not quite there yet if I want to take this as seriously as a heart attack.

Have you ever seen a wheelchair float?

25 Nov
Blog post catch-up time! Here we go.
Early this month, the company I work for entered 4 teams to go paddling down a man-made canal in aid of children with special needs. This is the third year of the event and
Globaleye are the reigning undefeated champions of the DFC Canal. Hoorah!

I wanted to show my support and therefore volunteered my dear husband into one of the teams. Aren’t I the clever one? The new batch of caps and shirts arrived just in time for the event so we had team spirit at least.
Here are some of the guys chilling out just before the start of the race. Chilling out is a figure of speech here since the afternoon sun was directly on us.

After a shaky start, the first race got under way and whaddaya know, our team won. Bernie, Steven, Dan and Rob paddled their way to victory with plenty of distance from the runner-up team. So they moved up to the next round.
One of the first teams to volunteer was this group of young rascals: Inge, Nadine, Sachin and Stefan. They look confident, don’t they? Well, sadly they didn’t win their round and were promptly out of the race. I only managed to catch a bit of their race and saw Stefan was the only one left on their boat at one point!
Tim’s little darling daughter Chloe came and I just had to take this photo. She was so sweet and you could tell Daddy dotes on her so much. Stef, what are you doing ruining this beautiful shot?!
Tim captained his original team for the next round. Being ex-Royal Navy, he takes to water just like a duck!
And there they go. The team in front consists of an ex-Army dude so it was a great race.
Chaos broke lose when some of the teams didn’t touch the rope at the turn and cheated their way back. Tim had to jump out of his wheelchair and swim out to the rope then back to his chair in order to qualify their win.
Tired much? Tim slumped on the wheelchair after nearly missing the qualifying round.
There was a bit of a break before the semi-finals started so I had time to take photos of everyone. Rob seemed to have been enjoying the nice day out.
Even Princess, Stefan’s and Kelly’s little pup was loving all the attention from the grown-ups and the kids alike.
Little Ethan was probably wishing his Dad would get him a puppy.
The young ones. Shame they didn’t focus their energy into the race. They would have been a shoo-in!
Saeed, one of Tim’s friends and an avid supporter of charitable causes talks shop with Rob.On the semi-final round, Bernie’s team won so they moved up to the finals. Ethan wanted to sit on the chair for that round so they let him.
Andrew going for three-peat! Tim sat this round out and Rob took his usual place instead.
There was a bit of scuffle with another team who were trying to hold Rob back to force their way around our team. The judges were crap about violations.
Andy T proud of his boys. Ethan enjoyed being taken around for a ride on the boats.
Nick, the organiser talking to Tim and Andrew about some technicalities.
Aww, Stef, Kelly and Princess….told him he could use this for their Christmas card this year and I won’t even ask for royalties. :)
Jay Ray…sadly he didn’t even got a chance to get on the boats. Next year, mate.
Group photo! The sun was terrible that day. I got burned after being out there for only 15 minutes. I have no doubt that we will be back next year.
Andrew was so happy to get his pink jute bag. LOL!
And we are the champions! Each member of the team took home a crystal plaque, a gift certificate from the Festival City and free 2-month membership at Fitness First. Cool huh?
Grabbed this photo from the event organizers. I knew I should have stood on the side to avoid the darned glare from the sun.

Next year I will try and convince them to put in an all-girls team. What do you think?

All about me

24 Nov
The 23rd day of November each year is all about me.
Sheesh, how narcissistic is that statement, huh? But hey, yes, yesterday was my day. My birthday. I think I deserve to post about me instead of things related to me for a change, right?

Yes, I turned another year older, or as Kyle XY put it, another year closer to death. Yikes. I am not afraid to admit that I am now 38 years old. Don’t feel like it really. I conditioned my mind to always feel around 24-ish, stress on the
ish. But my body somehow didn’t get the memo.
The first birthday greeting I received was at 12.30am from my husband. Yes, that’s the time I rolled into bed yesterday. Then I had a text message from my father, screaming Happy Birthday to me :) .
I received the usual higs and kisses from colleagues at work. It’s always embarrasing but none more so than when Tim walked up the stairs singing Happy Birthday in his “choir” voice, of course the acoustics of the office meant his voice resounded all over the place. So embarrasing I tell you. He came up and gave me a bouquet of white lilies and cabbage roses, so pretty. I then had another bunch of flowers from the girls plus two birthday cakes. Yes two!

And yet I don’t look very happy, do I? Nah, just listening intently to someone.
I called my kids and apparently I ruined their master plan on how they were going to greet me. I spoke to each of them except Viel who was still on her way home from school. I. MISS. MY. KIDS. SO. MUCH. There’s Tim and the bouquets of flowers.
Ooof! Not the top of my head! My hair’s thinning there.
Lovely flowers. Eibee would definitely love teh white lilies which are now all in full bloom.
Tim so kindly agreed to take this photo of us. Unfortunately I had the 50mm lens on and he couldn’t get all of us in the frame. Not bad for someone who has not taken any lessons, right?
After work, Bernie picked me up and we headed for dinner. We’re not the fancy schmancy types and since we were both really starving by then, we decided to go to Wagamama’s at Crowne Plaza. It was amazing as always.
Hmm, food photography, anyone? The teriyaki beef was just amazing.
We walked around the block a bit to enjoy the cool evening air. Across the road from us was the Emirates Towers Hotel, venue of our upcoming gala dinner. It was a beautiful sight but with the 50mm’s limited view I could only show you this bit. A parking meter acted as my support to steady this shot.
It was a great birthday, but could have been better if my kids were here. I missed the hugs and the homemade greeting cards.

Thanks to Edelyn for taking over camera duty and for the lovely necklace and purse set. Thanks to Hazel for the gorgeous brooch.

Combat Climate Change

20 Nov
I mentioned before about a photo competition which we were “forced”to enter as part of our completion requirement for photography class. It was a bit of a sore point for me really since there was this whole speech about where our passion for photography was and how we were not deserving of a spot in the Advanced Levels if we were not taking it seriously.

Pbbbtttt!

We had to cram for the photo on the day of the deadline and despite a lot of trouble we managed to get the photos we liked. Bernie was not happy since his original concept could not be executed so he had to settle for the next best thing. This was his final project and competition entry. Simple, but relevant to the topic.
My original idea for this project was to take a photo of 3 or 4 car mufflers and I’d stick a Gerbera daisy on each one of them. Sort of like a “Go green!” kind of thing going on. But it was tough getting the muffler shots and even though I had access to a parking lot full of cars all day at work, I still didn’t find the time to play with the camera. I’m glad I ditched that idea since there was and entry just like it!

In the end I settled for a simple concept. Went and hunted down a good sized globe, grabbed my first aid kit from the house and plastered a band aid on the globe which I propped on a bed of greens. Oh yes I had to get a blanket so that I could lie on my stomach on the ground, by the roadside where people where probably wondering what a crazy fat woman was doing.

I kinda like the result.

It was so surreal to see the photos up on the wall during Graduation Day. More on that later.
The winners of the photo competition were announced yesterday, sadly our entries didn’t make it but to have been part of a nationally recognised competition like this is great as it is.

I can’t wait for next year!

A day at the park

15 Nov
I am behind on blogging, it’s not even a joke. I have a wedding, a graduation and a farewell party to blog about but haven’t got the time to sift through all the photos and upload them, not to mention write about them too! If anyone has a spare 24 hours of every day, please can you send some my way? KTHX.

Two weeks ago, after the Clean Up Drive, we went to Mamzar Park for a barbecue. Swimming was mentioned, even suggested but with a 7am start, it was the last thing I had in mind. So off to the park we went. It seemed quiet but everyone is on the beach, on the grass, by the barbecue, having fun.
My mates from the office came along with us, as a compensation for making them get up early on a Friday to pick up rubbish along the beach. Fair trade, right? Lovella was so happy that I was feeding her. See how high she jumped?
And it wasn’t just her, it’s all of them! Well, except for Franco who was being grumpy. :(
I am never short of subjects when I am around these guys!
Yes, we were not supposed to cook pork in the barbecue area. But do we listen? Heck no! Bring on the pork bellies and the spare ribs! Don’t click on this next photo if you are squeamish, Why? Bees. As in bzzzzzzzzzz honey bees. This was part of the honey bee’s lunch I think.Have you ever met my brother and sister-in-law? Here they are. Looking like they were on their first date whereas they have been married for 3 years I think.
Short and sweet, like honey from the bees. Ack! Didn’t mean to remind you of the bees!

Back to Basics

14 Nov
Before anything else, I would like to say a happy happy 64th birthday to my father today. Happy birthday, Tatay!

After knitting lace and knit/purl socks, I find that going back to basics is a joy and a relief. Thanks to Kate Atherley’s Basic Ribbed Socks for the much-needed break from intricately patterned socks.

The 3×2 rib pattern on the leg and the top of the foot is so rhythmic as to being relaxing at the same time. It’s not nearly as mindless but it’s doesn’t put the grey matter inside my head under so much strain. Plus it goes so quickly! Much of the second sock, from cast on to the heel turn, was done one Friday morning and the rest of it over two nights in front of the TV.

The yarn is rough to the touch as you knit but once it was soaked, it became softer. I also managed to make the stripes match this time. Yay! I had to pull out a small amount of yarn to get it right but it was so worth it. There is good yardage on this yarn so I still have plenty of leftover.

I enjoyed knitting every second of this pair of socks. I hope the recipient would enjoy wearing them too. Incidentally, this is officially the 17th pair of socks I knitted this year. Me = :) .
I know these are not mine and I might be stretching them out by trying them on my size 9 feet, but i had to take modelled shots, hadn’t I?
Okay so, my feet are really big. There, they’re on the sock blockers, happy now?See? Matchy matchy with the stripeys? My gauge must have been off on the second sock since a bit of the peach snuck in at the very tip of the toe. but who’s gonna see that right?
Love love love this pair.
Project: Peachy Ribs
Pattern: Basic Ribbed Socks by Kate Atherley (link above)
Yarn: Zwerger Garn Opal Hundertwasser, colourway 2104
Needles: 2.5mm
Cast on: 11 Oct 2009
Cast off: 8 Nov 2009
Notes: Cast on 64 stitches and followed the pattern up to the toe where I used my new fave, star toe.I like how it gives a rounded finish instead of the silly triangular one.

And now the knitting

8 Nov
I’ve been knitting. Yes, can never put the needles down even if I wanted to.

If beer lovers have Oktoberfest, sock knitters have Socktoberfest. Yeah! Okay, that may have sounded truly geeky but I bet you it’s a lot more interesting when knitters knit socks all month long than people getting drunk on beer all month! Not to mention it is a heck of a lot more productive!

I officially entered my Escalator Socks for Socktoberfest, which I managed to cast off with 30 minutes to spare. It was a bit of a chore for me since I aimed to finish 4 pairs of socks in the month. I finished only 3 and didn’t even get to pick up the two WIPs I have. Regardless, I feel good about completing 3 pairs and also continue to exceed my 12-pair target for 2009.

This is the pair of Escalator Socks, fresh off the needles and onto their recipient’s feet, who was more than game for the photo session.
The pattern is so simple, just knits and purls, but it was engaging enough. The yarn is Malabrigo Sock which I bought in the natural colourway and hand-dyed a while ago. I love how the colours knitted up. This yarn is so soft too but I think a tad too light for socks. Definitely perfect for shawls!
This pair was supposed to be entered in the SolidSocks October competition as well but I didn’t post the FO photo in time. I did wonder if it would qualify since the colour was variegated, but the forum Mod said they were okay. I am now kicking myself for not insisting on posting the photo before I went to bed that night!
Project: Escalating Blue
Pattern: Escalator Socks by Sara Amoroso
Yarn: Malabrigo Sock Natural, dyed with KoolAid and silk paints
Needles: 2.25mm
Cast on: 11 Oct 2009
Cast off: 31 Oct 2009
Notes: No mods at all, did an extra long cuff which worked out well.

One other finished pair is the Bricker Socks which I have not been able to photograph properly until now. This is a present for someone in the family and I am hoping it is appreciated. As you can see it is also a knit-purl combination so between this and the Escalators I am just about done with this stitch combination for socks! I do love the finished product, so stretchy and the yarn is so comfy.
It doesn’t look much but the basketweave-like pattern is so pretty. This is about the closest I can get the true colour of the yarn.
Project: Brown Bricks
Pattern: Bricker Socks by Anne Hanson
Yarn:
Cascade Yarns Heritage Solid, colourway Bark
Needles:
2.5mm
Cast on:
26 Sept 2009
Cast off:
18 Oct 2009
Notes:
5 repeats on the leg, 6 repeats on the foot. supposed to do these toe-up using Cat Bordhi’s Riverbed Architecture but I chickened out in the end!

At the moment I am working on:
  1. Basic Ribbed Socks for a nephew using Opal Hundertwasser
  2. Lacy Baktus for a friend using Socks That Rock Mediumweight, colourway Bella Coola
  3. Tea Leaves Cardigan for myself, using Sundara Sport Merino
  4. Masonic Lodge Socks for Joseph using DeKay Duet
I still have others which are snoozing at the moment but will post about them later.

Clean up the World

7 Nov
The Dubai Municipality sponsors a clean-up drive every year and Lightform (our photography guild in Dubai) helps to organize this event. Last week, Bernie and I joined more than a dozen local Filipino communities to clean up a stretch of Mamzar Beach.

It was a glorious day, a little hot afterwards but the sky was beautiful and everyone had a great time.Even kiddies helped pick up rubbish along the water’s edge.At the end of the 3-hours or so, this was how much trash we gathered in the nearby beach area. Astonishing how campers and beach-goers manage to leave so much trash even though there are trash bins dotted around the area.I entered what must be the smallest group in the campaign and signed up two of my colleagues from work. Bernie, Franco and Mark helped out as well. Next year I will definitely sign up again but perhaps try and get the company involved too. I think the 7am registration is a bit too much for some of my night-life loving colleagues, but if it’s for a good cause I am sure they will say yes.

At the Koubba

7 Nov
Every third Thursday of the month, the company holds a drinks reception as a way to socialize but also to welcome the newly inducted candidates who completed the training course that week. It’s also a very nice way to talk to each other outside the office, and in a more relaxed atmosphere. However Tim expects everyone to talk about business ideas and not just drink the bar down at his expense! Fair enough I say.

Last month we changed our usual venue from Club 8 to the Koubba Bar which is a mere couple of blocks up the road. We used this venue before when we held a Client Reception a few years ago. They were excellent and took really great care of us.

Since the weather has turned for the better, we decided to sit out in the terrace and watch the sun go down.

This is Andy T, our Managing Director.
Stephen, Dan (who wanted nothing to do with my camera that day) and Caroline
Oh look, there’s me and my glass of white wine
That’s Andy again with Phil, who is VP in our Sao Paulo office and was visiting that week
Some of the guys from down the “boiler room”: Sachin, Nadine, Inge and Ben
David or as we like to call him, Texas because that’s where he is from!
Jamil gives a thumbs up for the new venue!
Rania has also had enough of the camera!
Assaad and Heba having fun with the drinks
I wish I had my UV filter. This was heavily adjusted in Lightroom.
The magnificent facade of the Al Qasr Hotel
The Burj was witness to all of our merriment
The light was too tempting so I took this photograph
Took this shot off the fly and was surprised that it turned out okay. Tim thinks it’s alright too. I’ve been giving him photography tips since he purchased an EOS 1000D recently.

The wind towers of the Madinat stood guard as the night started to crawl in.
I am not sure if we will come back to this place but if we do I will take more and better photos.

I love my camera!

7 Nov
Next Friday is the graduation day for the Basic Photography Class. I can’t believe it’s almost over and I am ready to go on to Advanced Level 1.

Someone asked me recently if I find any difference in how I take photographs now that I have taken a course. The answer is a resounding YES!

A couple of weeks ago I was looking at older photographs pre-Lightform and was cringing all the way through! I thought I took decent photographs before but now I can see some photos were overexposed, some had camera shake, and some had truly awful composition. As one of our instructors said in his lessons, “Why like this?”

I certainly know better now how to read the numbers on my LCD screen and what’s more I know what they mean!

I mentioned something about a photo competition which we were all asked to join. This is my entry. This is also my final project entry. Can you guess what title I gave this photo?
Here are some random photos taken around town in the past few weeks. We’ve been getting some truly gorgeous skies in the morning, just before the sun rises high up on that horizon.
And the clearer evening skies make for some great photos too. This might be a bit blurry since I was in the car at it stopped at light.
At a bit past 6 in the morning, the streets had a beautiful glow to them.
Dear old cactus in the office. It’s blooming nicely but still icks me out with all those sharp points.
I can’t wait for the next Eid. We plan to go out of town again, take some photos and perhaps camp out too. The weather’s just perfect for camping now.
