Urge to Purge

31 Dec
Pardon the rush of posts. I want to get these photos posted before I start my 2009 blog-o-rama. This first photo is dedicated to my friend, Litchi! This bunch of lychees are the sweetest ever, and the cherries were not bad either.

Okay, macros then.

I called this photo Bite! Bite of what, Lee asked. Well, it’s a praline-filled chocolate ball from the children’s Christmas grab bag. Teeth marks courtesy of yours truly.

Joseph had a bag of jelly buttons and I borrowed three of them for these next two shots.
My sister-in-law Linell made a seafood and veggie soup on Christmas Day at the park. I borrowed the mushrooms before they got dunked in the broth.

I’ve always envied my sister’s long lashes. She got the good genes in the family. Here is a close up of her lashes.

There were plenty of little white flowers which fell on the walkways at the park. I picked out one which was the least damaged and asked it to pose for me. I love its yellow tips.

On Christmas Eve when we gave out presents to the kids, I forgot to give Isabelle hers because the box got jammed underneath the sofa when we moved the furniture around to accomodate everyone for dinner. I discovered it the following day and brought it with us to the park. Here is a detail of the gold ribbon on the present.

Okay, so that’s it for photographs from December. Now I can move on to New Year’s photos.

Something different

31 Dec

T minus 7.15 hours and it’s now boring beyond words here at work.

No one is doing any work, just chatting, surfing the internet, doodling. Doodling? Well, that shows you. I thought I’d be more productive and catch you up on photos that I haven’t posted here. Here are more photos from our day at the park on Christmas Day.

Aibi running around after Isabelle
.

Isabelle and Ronan, or their feet at least, relaxing at the park after ghours if

Joseph’s Chucks were taking a break too.

My Swan Song socks went out and about for the first time. And they liked it!

My happy feet.

Even my Hush Puppies loved the socks!

The park had plenty of stuff for photo opportunities. Take this tree stump for instance!

Or this flower, not sure what it’s called but my daughter said it looked like a weird lily.
While we were at he park, one of Patric;s godmother stopped by to give him his Christmas present. This was the moment when he opened the box and found an MP4 player inside!

And this was him earlier when all the kids went to the playground area. He asked me where his Superman cape was.

Joseph chilled out as ever.

Aibi had a tough time getting off of the swing!

Dubai is one of the few places on the planet where you will find shops of the same type within a stone’s throw of each other. Sometimes even next door to each other!

I don’t like having my photo taken but Bernie snuck this one when I wasn’t looking and I kind of like it. Notice the cable cars blurred in the background.
Ah, this one I posed for and I like, just like any photo with my son Patrick.

And then it was Bernie’s turn.

Edit: This posthas been in draft for the past two days and now I have to post this as I have the New Year’s Eve and January 1st photos to post.

Cancelled!

31 Dec
New Year’s Eve is cancelled in Dubai.

How? Why? Read it here.

ETA: Right bummer, isn’t it? We’re still on for Japanese dinner tonight, at least the restaurant says so. The kids are most disappointed about the fireworks not happening.

The rumour is that Sheikh Mo has actually died after one of his sons fatally shooting him a couple of weeks ago or something. But try and Google that and you will find no hint of that rumour. It’s been going around Dubai and people are speculating that the government will make the announcement after the New Year.

Can’t wait to find out the truth.

I think Lee might be right

30 Dec
It’s tough for me to admit it, but I will. Lee, my friend, you are right. This is obsessive compulsive behaviour. Remember those days when we were both quite enamoured by a certain brown-eyed Englishman and we were exploring the world of Photoshop wonders for teh first time? It’s kinda like that for me with knitting.

It’s a whole new world of wonders and finding kindred spirit who are just as passionate about it makes it just that bit more enjoyable. The yarn buying and gawking at patterns is obsessive compulsive, yes but the actual knitting is my therapy. Last night, Bernie tried on the socks I knitted for him for the first time and he was quite pleased with them, said he loves them. That was quite a moment for us.

So, obsessive compulsive? Hell yeah!

That felt good having it out like that. Now back to normal programming.

I gave Aibi a bonsai starter kit for Christmas – she who is into all things Japanese at the moment – and I helped set it up a few days ago. This morning I was so pleased to see that the hyssop seeds are sprouting in one of the pots. I’m sure she’ll be so excited when she wakes up and sees this.

And now, about them really expensive needles. It came in one of those cardboard tubes and inside was this plastic tube looking all fancy and important. There was tissue paper inside.

The tissue paper rolled out to reveal these beauties. Now when you order at SNA online, you specify the needle type (DPN or straight) and size, length, type of tip (stiletto, middy or blunt) and cap (teardrop, spiral or bell). You do not select the colour of the shaft, they do that for you. So I did not know what colour I was getting. I got the green and I am mighty pleased about it.
The needles are so light to the touch. The size is etched onto the shaft so you won’t forget. Everything about it just screams fine craftsmanship. If it weren’t so darned expensive I would push my luck and ask my husband to fund a gradual replacement plan for my needles!
I love the bell caps! They curve ever so slightly and do not add any weight to the needles. Next time I buy I will definitely have to try the spiral caps.
I chose stiletto tips because nothing bugs me more than struggling to do k3tog’s ! They’re probably dangerous to an unsuspecting family member so I will have to remember to not keep these lying around the sofa. I cant’ wait to try these babies out!

My Christmas Loot Part 1

29 Dec
So I told you I am on a self-imposed yarn diet from the 1st of January 2009. Yes, I am because I am in so many yarn clubs and have a lot of yarn still making their way to my New York mailbox. That should tide me over in the next year without any worries of running out of materials for projects.

With the Christmas weekend over, my shipper came by today with some goodies for me. I am excited about all of them but more so about the tube that came from Signature Needle Arts.

After reading about it in the Yarn Harlot’s blog, I had to check it out. Admittedly, it is a bit rich for my purse so I bookmarked the site and looked at it on a regular basis with much longing. So regular in fact that a miracle happened. The husband did notice that I kept browsing that site and said two weeks ago that I can buy them a my Christmas present. Well, it’s sort of expected as he never really gets me anything; I buy the presents that I want/like anyway. But this is the first time that he acknowledged and contributed to my knitting habit hobby.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

To cut a long story short, I now own a green Signature Needle Art size 6, stiletto tip, 10″, bell cap straight knitting needle. *pets* I can’t wait to knit with these.

On the stash-building front, I received:

  • 1 skein of BMFA STR Lightweight in Mustang Sally, a Rockin’ Sock Club colourway btw
  • 1 skein of Opal Magic #1036
  • 1 skein of Trekking XXL #30
  • 10 skeins of Estelle 100% Silk
All of the above were bought from Theresa’s stash on Ravelry. On top of that I received a big 7.5lbs box of Annalea’s entire stash. woOt! I am crazy I know that but I can’t resist a good buy when I see it. Photos to follow.

In the next few weeks I expect to receive:

  • My barn sale items from Blue Moon Fiber Arts
  • Sock yarns from Knit Picks
  • 3 skeins of Sundara yarns from Anna’s stash
  • Madeline Tosh sock yarn from a cosmicplutoknits destash
Speaking of sock yarns, I finally broke the spell and cast on with my first Socks That Rocks Lightweight. I joined a KAL (Knit Along) with the Socks That Rawk group on Ravelry on a pattern called Leyburn Socks. The idea for the KAL is to use a colourway whcih has not been used before to see how the pattern would knit up in different weights and colours.

I chose my Rosebud Lightweight, one of the first orders I made at BMFA. I can’t get over how soft the yarn is in my hands. And the pattern is a dream! It’s easy to remember so I don’t even have to look at the print out anymore. I’m also knitting both socks toe-up on two different circulars at the same time, from either end of the yarn ball as I don’t want to run out of yarn. I also don’t want to have so much leftover either. If the socks don’t fit me then there’s always my daughters or my sister to take them. Here is a WIP photo, I have knitted a few more pattern repeats since this was taken yesterday.

Yes, I’m a happy knitter.

It is done!

27 Dec

The Thujas are done!

They are drying out in the balcony right now so should be ready to wear by tomorrow.

I had about 75% yarn leftover so I’m thinking of making a skinny scarf to go with the socks. Bernie’s not so hot about scarves but maybe he will humour me and wear it while the weather is the way it is now.

Pattern: Thuja by Bobby Zeigler
Size made: To fit size 10s
Yarn: 2.25 skeins of Artyarns Supermerino, colourway 119
Purchased from Jimmy Beans Wool
Needle size: 4mm Knit Picks nickel-plated circulars

Love, love, love this pattern and will make mini-Thujas for my sons. Patrick wants the light blue and Joseph will have the purple.

The Night Before Christmas

27 Dec

Everything went according to plan and we started just in time. Only my brother-in-law Larry and his family were slightly late due to parking issues.

My mother-in-law started cooking at around 3pm. She was doing 3 dishes so I gave her the kitchen until I was ready to start with the gammon. The cheesecake was chilling in the fridge reay to be topped with the blueberries just before serving.Honey roasted gammon, pork barbecue on sticks, baked spaghetti, noodles, Arooz Valenciana, puto pao and hotdogs on sticks

With 10 kids expected to be present, I was armed and ready with chocolates and candy! Mini candy canes, bite sized Snickers and Mily Way, Rolo and holiday M n Ms were a-plenty but the kids had other things in mind so there’s still plenty leftover. The loot hidden in our bedroom!

The cute candycanes with mini stockings and jelly Santa and friends

I had to move some of the guppies and borrow their square bowl for a night

Dinner gave me an opportunity to use the wide angle lens because the space we were in was not all that big. Here is the view of the dinner table with most everyone. We had to do a buffet set up because my table can only sit 6. Notice the tree with all the presents underneath it!

Everyone added presents as they arrived so we had a sizeable stack by the time we started dinner.
I love this photo of Aibi!

The boys posed for me just before dinner.

Patrick had to be coerced into posing with Tita Cathy in his new striped jumper.

And of course it was Ronan’s 8th birthday at exactly 12.20 am so we had cake!

I was stuffed by the end of the evening and we still had plenty of leftovers which we took to the park the following day. Photos on that adventure later.

For now it’s chilling out, cleaning the house, knitting and catching up on sleep before we get right on to our New Year’s Eve plans.

It’s Nearly Time

24 Dec

T Minus Twelve Hours

24 Dec
At twenty-one hundred hours tonight, the entire Viernes clan will descend upon our two-bedroom hall flat laden with presents, home-cooked food and matching appetite to go with it.

Filipinos traditionally celebrate on Christmas Eve with a (close to) midnight dinner with the family followed by exchanging gifts. Christmas Day is when we go to church to give thanks and ask for blessings. For the past 8 years it also meant celebrating my nephew’s birthday.

When I was younger, Christmas Day was when our parents would take us around to most of our other relatives to share a meal with them and exchange more gifts. Christmas and New Year week is one long festival of food and gifts. A little girl could only eat so much traditional desserts and ham.

The only sad note to this year’s Christmas is that my first born is away in Manila. I will definitely be on the phone to her tonight. Sure there might be tears (I’m choking up a bit as I type!) but she is with family so she is well looked after. Next year, I plan to take the family back to Manila and have a reunion of sorts and let the kids experience a proper Filipino Christmas.

And yes, I have photos. The mini-sock now hangs in the tree along with the mini-sweaters. Next year, the tree will have a knitted skirt.

The Thujas are coming along very well, thank you very much. This was last night just before I went to bed. A couple more inches to go before the toe decreases, which I am now doing, sneaking into my knitting bag when no one is looking. I am in the office by the way. Not by choice, mind you. The boss needed me here so I am here but we have an accord so I will be off by midday to get back home to start on the ham and the cheesecake for tonight.

I don’t think the Thujas will use up all 3 skeins of the yarn so I will have almost a full skein leftover when both socks are done. I haven’t decided what to do with leftover yarns just yet so they sit in one ziplock bag waiting for the decision on their fate.

Confession time. I was supposed to be on a yarn diet back in late October. But I have been a very bad girl and have been buying up yarn from other people’s stash as well as signing up for yarn clubs left, right and centre. For most of 2009, I have exactly 7 yarn clubs scheduled to deliver sumptuous, exclusive colourway yarns to me. Here is the complete schedule:
  • Blue Moon Rockin Sock Club (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sept and Nov) – I am most excited about this one!
  • Sundara Seasons Collection (Feb, Apr) – I have received two mailings so far, read further below for 2nd mailing details
  • Sundara Sweater Collection (Feb) – just one mailing but it’s quality Sundara yarn in sweater quantities!
  • Sundara Lace Collection (Jan, Mar and June) – I have never knitted in lace but feel the great need to covet lace yarn
  • Pride and Prejudice Club from Etsy (Mar, May, Sept) – I chose the Liz Bennett and Mr. Darcy colourway
  • Madeline Tosh Magnolia Club (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr) – The colourways look absolutely amazing!
  • Yarntini Happy Hour Sock Club (Jan, Feb, Mar) – I think I chose the “appletini” colourway

Add to this the recent slew of purchases made which have yet to be delivered to me, including one knitter’s entire stash! Yes, I am weak. No wonder my bank called yesterday to confirm if I have been purchasing through Paypal. My credit card statement has nothing but Paypal transactions on it.

I am never one for New Year’s Resolutions but I talked myself into making one for 2009 and that is to not buy any more yarn. Do not laugh! I have so much in stash and so much more to come as the above list shows so I should have no reason to covet any yarn right? Right. I need a mantra that I can chant to myself to remind me of this.

Back to the Sundara Seasons Collection, my second mailing arrived the other day. It’s Fingering Silk Merino in the Flaming Flamingo colourway. Five hundred yards of 50% silk, 50% merino. It is amazing! I compared this skein with the sock yarn I received in the first mailing and the addition of silk does make a pronounced difference. The yarn is much smoother to the touch and the sheen is amazing. Here it is in it’s loveliness.

With that I leave you with warmest wishes for the best Christmas and New Year.

Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones!

I meant to say something witty

21 Dec

…but I can’t come up with anything.

I am not a leader. Never been, never fancied myself to be one. I am not a blind follower either. I do have my own opinion, it’s just that most of the time it mirrors others’ and I am seen to be following the masses. Sometimes it’s also easier for the mind and soul to go with the flow. There’s less friction, less confrontation, more getting along well with others. Mostly this is the reason I follow.

Also because when the Yarn Harlot waves her magic knitter’s hands, magic tends to happen.

In the links above, Stephanie talked about resisting Brooklyn Tweed’s Striped Scarf just because everyone did it. If you clicked on any of the links above, you’d find proof that the Yarn Harlot is only human after all as she succumbed to the power of beautiful pieces of knitted objects.

I felt like that with socks. I still do sometimes. People said, once you knit a pair of socks, you will not want to stop. Bollocks I said! What about those lovely cardigans and scarves and mittens? Then I began to wonder when most of the popular online yarn shops specialize in sock yarns. Not that there’s anything wrong with that because sock yarns are perfect for other projects too. I’ve seen shawls knitted with Wollmeise and Socks That Rock. Hats and mittens knitted with Shibui Socks and Lorna’s Laces. And before you know it I was reading up on sock knitting techniques, browsing through yarn e-shops, looking for an easy beginner’s pattern and then, and this is the really fun part, I started buying sock yarn.

Why, as recently as one week ago I was one of those hundreds if not thousands of people across the world madly clicking away to register to the 2009 Rockin’ Sock Club! I managed to get in the day after registration began so I’m cool now. My sock yarn stash is nowhere near decent I think but I have fallen in love with it. Also having conquered my fear of DPNs earlier this year, it’s a huge step towards improving my sock knitting skills. Of course, I have to actually knit and finish a pair of socks first.

Which I did!

My Swan Song Toe-up Socks are done. (Sshhh, don’t even mention the hibernating Jaywalkers). Took longer than I would have liked only because I had quite a lot on my plate, still do. But these are now blocked and stored in my sock drawer ready to make their first outing on Christmas Day when we hit the park for barbecue and my nephew/godson’s birthday celebration. I can’t wait to show these off!

I just cast-on for a pair of Thuja’s for Bernie and he loves the way it looks. It is a fast knit but then again I will probably not finish it in time (Does a Christmas morning deadline sound a bit too optimistic?). Who cares? I am knitting something I get so much fun out of and it shows my husband I do not just buy yarn. I do knit useful stuff with them.

Oh yes, three days to go until C-Day. I’m not remotely ready. The ham is still in the meat section of my favourite shop somewhere but at least I know what I will be cooking. It’s the usual pot luck dinner in our place plus presents for the kids and lots of fun. No Dom Perignon this year I’m afraid but I do have plenty of red wine which will compliment most of our dinner items.

The mini-sweaters are on the tree but I didn’t have time to make mini-hangers so I just stuck them onto the branches.

Andback to our first topic above, any guesses what destiny lies beyond the new year for these beauties?

Yep, you guessed it. Striped Scarves. I hope the colourways I chose would blend well together. If Stephanie’s posts did not make you green with envy, take a look at these pretties from Flickr. This should set me on the right track if I want to give only knitted gifts for Christmas next year.
